Orlando Pirates to meet with major Kaizer Chiefs target

Kaizer Chiefs target Khanyisa Mayo has spoken of his admiration for Amakhosi but he’s also meeting up with Orlando Pirates soon.

Khanyisa Mayo admires Kaizer Chiefs

26-year-old Khanyisa Mayo wasn’t a million miles away from becoming a Chiefs player in the winter before eventually making the switch to Algerian side Belouizdad. The former Cape Town City man was reportedly less than an hour away from becoming a Glamour Boy and he’s not shutting the door on a move in the future. Mayo notched double figures for goals in each of his last two Betway Premiership campaigns. However, he’s yet to open his scoring account for Belouizdad after eight matches across all competitions.

“Regarding Chiefs, yes, if I ever think about coming back home, they will be my first preference,” Mayo told KickOff.

“I see myself representing one of the top teams in the country,” Mayo said, affirming his loyalty to Kaizer Chiefs. The 24-year-old striker emphasised, “If I ever think about coming back home, they will be my first preference.” Mayo’s admiration for the club runs deep, noting that his father played for Chiefs, which strengthens his bond to the team. “It’s the biggest team in South Africa, and my dad played there,” Mayo added, hinting at the emotional connection that could guide his decision if he returns to South Africa.

Mayo to meet up with Orlando Pirates

Is there a transfer link between the former Cape Town City striker and the Buccaneers? No, but their respective sides do battle in the Caf Champions League on Tuesday 27 November. Orlando Pirates also face African champions Al Ahly in the group stages.

Mofokeng critical to Pirates’ Champions League chances

A few more starring displays for Pirates and Bafana Bafana and more notoriety for the player on foreign soil could see his value and price skyrocket. It’s inevitable that a player with Mofokeng’s gifts will move abroad to test his mettle; Pirates must choose the right time for both their bank balance and the player’s welfare and development. Now is not that time. However, fast-forward two years and the Bucs board might be bringing in a mammoth transfer fee for one of the most talented players of his generation.

Often the attackers, especially central strikers Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa, must share the minutes around. Mofokeng is almost always in the starting XI though.

Will Mayo make a move back to South Africa in the next few years?
