Orlando Pirates chasing R20 million bounty; Mofokeng update
Orlando Pirates are daring to dream – the elusive PSL title looms.
It’s been twelve years – thirteen seasons – since the Buccaneers last won the league, a time when Andile Jali was setting up Benni McCarthy and Isaac Chansa for fun.
However, they’ve enjoyed cup success, winning four MTN8 Cups and three Nedbank Cups during their PSL drought, which could be ending soon.
Jose Riveiro’s has Orlando Pirates looking like a well-oiled machine, winning their first seven league games (and counting) for the first time in its history, scoring thirteen goals while conceding only two.
PSL prize money is rising
From R500,000 to R20,000,000, PSL’s prize money has grown exponentially in recent times thanks to lucrative contracts with DSTv and Betway.
The Sea Robbers lie first on the log, three points ahead of reigning champions, who have enjoyed successive seasons distant at the top, beating second-placed Orlando Pirates by twenty-three points last campaign and sixteen points the year before.
Three-time MTN8 champion José Riveiro is a PSL title away from completing his South African grand slam – his squad seems poised to battle fiercely for the title until the very end of the season.
Mofokeng update
Relebohile Mofokeng, who has caught the eye of Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers, is gaining more global recognition, meaning his quest overseas could be imminent.
However, He seems set to stay for the 2024/25 campaign, but that might not be the case for next season.
Mandla Qhogi, Mofokengs old coach and mentor, believe it’s time to flock the nest, telling SoccerLaduma, “For me, it will be a good time for him to go overseas. It is the right time and there are things that he would learn if he were to move now at this stage of his career. The more we keep him this side it could mean that we are delaying him. He is 20, and I think it is the right time for him to move if he has to be sold overseas.”
