Olympians Shadir Musa, Semujju Join Pro Boxing

Uganda’s finest boxers that featured at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games in Japan including Shadir Musa Bwogi and David Ssemujju Kavuma have joined professional boxing, elevating from the armature grounds.

The Welterweight prospect, Shadir, and Ssemujju (middleweight) made the revelation on Tuesday in Lugogo during their unveiling by 12 Sports Rounds, a new professional boxing promotional company on the block.

“I want to add on my CV, I’ve done it all in armature boxing and think it’s my time so that I go in pro boxing,” Shadir Musa recounted on his new chapter, adding, “I will make it because I’m in my prime and see that I’m ready to come and face everyone and win belts.”

At the event graced by Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) president, Salim Uhuru, the duo alongside Catherine Nanziri, the only female boxer who featured at the Olympics, also launched their first pro fight scheduled for 1st April at the MTN Omondi stadium.

Organized under the theme, “From Olympics to Pro Boxing”, Shadir Musa will rumble against Mugarura Herbert in the day’s main bout while David “De Animal” Ssemujju and Latigo Hamza is another one to watch.

Shadir says their first show since participating at the Olympic games will fine tune boxers ahead of the trials for the Commonwealth games due in Birmingham later this year.

“However, Commonwealth are just games for beginners, just like other tournaments. They take you to see whether you’re ready or not. I know you can’t be there (armature) for so long. I was there just to look for a path for myself and look for a way of sneaking into pro boxing.”

Nanziri confirmed her participation in the “Fools Day” action as a guest boxer, but not under 12 Sports Rounds since she’s still under the management of A and B company with a valid running contract.

“So, I will just feature to fight because I have been inactive since returning from the Olympic games in Japan and yet I want to make money. Boxing is my Job and joining the paid ranks will partially help me solve my issues,” Nanziri echoed.

Steven Sembuya, president 12 Sports Rounds reiterated that luring three Olympians and other good boxers in the region is a privilege to them and targets staging four major events this year.

“But it’s not only good to us but also the Ugandans, they are going to get a buffet in professional boxing, the guys have different talents, different styles of play and they are really to entertain us and we are going to see a great transition from amateur to pro.”

Entrance will go for Shs 20000 (Ordinary), Shs 50000 (VIP) and 1000,000 (Table). Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), African Chocolate Company and NTV have joined forces towards a successful maiden event.
