Off-duty paramedic gunned down outside Edenvale Hospital [Watch]

A 30-year-old off-duty paramedic was shot and killed by a group of gunmen on Thursday outside the Edenvale Hospital.

WHAT HAPPENED THAT LET TO THE SHOOTING?

According to Mi7 Emergency Medical Services, Sibusiso Zondi was allegedly attacked by a group of gunmen and shot multiple times.

“He was off duty – a rare instance for Sbu who was so dedicated to saving lives each and every day – and headed to the hospital for an appointment with a doctor when he was allegedly attacked by a group of gunmen and shot multiple times.

“By the time other medics, who heard the gunshots from within the hospital grounds, reached the scene, Sbu had already passed,” it said in a statement on Facebook. 

PARAMEDICS WAS A WARM-HEARTED PERSON

Zondi was described as a warm-hearted, kind, and strong-willed individual.

“He was an exceptional medic who worked hard to save lives or ease the pain of the wounded. Sbu was always eager and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to assist not only the company but the greater community.

“He got along with anybody and everybody. We extend our sincere condolences to Sbu’s friends, family, and loved ones,” it furthermore said.

Neither the police nor the Gauteng Health Department could yet confirm or provide more details about the shooting. 

A memorial service was held for the Zondi on Friday.

RECENT ATTACKS ON EMERGENCY SERVICES:

In the past three months, there have been at least three attacks on emergency service workers. 

Last month, an ambulance transporting a patient was attacked with a rock on the N14.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the two ER24 paramedics and a patient had a lucky escape after a large rock got thrown through their rescue vehicle’s side window whilst driving on the N14 in Krugersdorp.

Two months ago, a KwaZulu-Natal paramedic was shot dead in an ambush, and her colleague was injured while they were in the process of preparing to transport injured patients to a hospital.

In Cape Town, three Fire and Rescue vehicles were attacked and stoned in less than 24 hours.
