North Korea win FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for third time
North Korea beat Spain on penalties in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, watch by over 18,000 in the Dominican Republic.
Bronze Ball and Bronze Boot winner Celia Segura opened the scoring for Spain just after the hour mark but North Korea took only four minutes to get back on level terms through Jon Il-chong, who was presented with the Golden Ball award.
Golden Boot recipient as tournament top scorer and also winner of the Silver Ball, Pau Comendador was one of two Spanish players to fail to convert a penalty in the shoot out, as the Koreans pipped Spain 4-3 from the spot with the decider netted by Kang Ryu-mi.
USA’s Kennedy Fuller was given the Silver Boot and teammate Evan O’Steen the Golden Glove, while the Fair Play award went to Nigeria.
Kenya took part in the tournament,for the first time ever,and gave good account of themselves before bowing out at the group stage with one win and two losses.Kenya lost 0-2 to England,0-2 to Korea before beating Mexico 2-1 in its final group match.
