North East Regional Police call for reinforcement ahead of 2020 polls

The Police Service in the North East Region says the number of personnel in the region will not be enough to meet the demand for all the polling stations, especially the 141 hotspots identified in the area.

The command says it originally intended to assign a minimum of two officers per polling station but it will not be able to do so.

The North East Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Reuben Dugah who spoke to Citi News on the issue said a request has been made for reinforcement.

“We plan to deploy at least two security officers to each identified hotspot polling stations. We will also zone the areas and put mobile patrol in the areas. There will be a joint patrol, the police, and the military. They will not remain static. We will have the static ones though. But these ones will be mobile to ensure that the patrol team are readily available when the need arises.

“Locally, we do not have the numbers, but we have requested for support from the headquarters so that we can take care of all these hotspots adequately,” he indicated.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has identified 4,098 hotspots across the country.

Regions with the highest hotspots include Ashanti with 635 flashpoints, 537 in the Central Region, 405 in the Eastern Region, and 323 in the Western Region.
