NDDC builds multi-purpose emergency shelters in three Niger Delta states

By Daniel Abia

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is constructing six multi-purpose emergency shelters in Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states to provide relief to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the event of flooding in the Niger Delta region.

According to Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of NDDC, the commission is taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of perennial flooding in the region. The project aims to provide comprehensive support to affected communities, with facilities including schools, hospitals, cafeterias, police posts, and recreation centers.

Ogbuku noted that the commission would intensify efforts to install solar-powered street lights across the nine Niger Delta states to combat criminality and maintain peace. The “Light Up the Niger Delta” campaign has already shown positive results, reducing criminality and enhancing commercial activities in the region.

In addition to infrastructure development, NDDC is launching the Holistic Opportunities Programme of Engagement (HOPE) in Port Harcourt this month. The program focuses on entrepreneurial and skills enhancement for youths in the Niger Delta region.

The NDDC Youth Internship Scheme, which will engage 10,000 youths, aims to provide meaningful and self-sustaining skills to improve their lives and support their families and communities. The commission is also collaborating with the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce to support farmers and entrepreneurs in the region.

Ogbuku highlighted NDDC’s achievements, including: Completed Projects: 25.7-kilometer Ogbia-Nembe road (in partnership with Shell Petroleum Development Company), 132KV Transmission Line and 32KV/33KV electricity substation at Okitipupa (serving over 2,000 communities in Ondo State), 1×15 MVA 33/11 KVA injection substation in Amufi, Edo State, 600-meter Ibeno Bridge and 6.87-kilometer Iko-Atabrikang-Opolom-IwuoAchang Road in Akwa Ibom State, Obehie to Oke Ikpe-road reconstruction in Abia State

These projects demonstrate NDDC’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Niger Delta residents.
