Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mukono police have displayed several electronic items believed to have been stolen from students of Uganda Christian University-UCU and residents from the nearby communities for collection. The items that were recovered from thugs include flat television sets, smartphones, refrigerators, and computers.
Some of the items have been displayed at the police station inside the UCU main campus while others are at Mukono police division headquarters. Luke Oweyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson says that the items were recovered in a month-long joint operation involving the police and sister agencies prompted by complaints from students and residents.
He says that the process to prosecute Allan Kitanda, the suspected criminal gang ringleader, Anatoli Kakeeto and Betty Nantongo who were arrested in connection to the thefts is almost complete.
According to Oweyesigyire, police have learned that most of the suspects reside within communities where students stay where they masquerade to trick their victims to think they are part of them. Much as police say that gangs are not from the university, students say several students participate in dubious deals including theft.
Simon Katamba, a student at UCU who resides in Kauga, says that they are currently scared of leaving the university late in the night for fear of being trailed. According to Katamba, the gangs trail them from the campus to their areas of residence.
Gift Wafula, another student and victim of robberies notes that there is a likelihood that these gangs also use chloroform before robbing their properties. She remembers the day she was attacked and did not hear anything only to wake up seeing the door open with her wallet, Samsung phone, and laptop missing.
Police are still hunting for other suspects including Stephen Ssemakula and Abdul Nsubuga. Owesigyire says people with stolen items are free to report to the Mukono division with proof of evidence and take their items.
