Gen Gregory Mugisha Muntu, one of the candidates in the 2021 presidential election has announced suspension of his campaign in response to the arrest of his counterpart Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).
Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform candidate was arrested in Luuka district for flouting campaign guidelines by attracting hundreds of supporters to his campaign venue.
The arrest sparked protests in Kampala, Wakiso and other districts in which a number of people are said to have been shot dead, and others badly injured.
In the wake of the event, Gen Muntu said he couldn’t continue on the campaign trail.
“We are operating in abnormal circumstances and today it looks like it is becoming extra abnormal. We understand that Bobi Wine has been arrested and that a number of people have been shot in Jinja and Kampala” Muntu said.
“Right this evening we are suspending our campaign until this matter is fully resolved,
Muntu called on the government to “stop being reckless” by “visiting terror on duly nominated presidential candidates.”
By night fall it was confirmed that Bobi Wine was charged with committing an act likely to cause the spread of an infectious disease.
