MTN8: Kaizer Chiefs vs Sundowns on the cards?

Kaizer Chiefs will play Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 if they manage to hold on to eighth place in the DStv Premiership.

The Soweto Giants are currently eight with a game left this season. Having played to a goalless draw against Polokwane City, Chiefs somehow managed to retain position number eight. They are one of the three teams with 36 points from 29 matches. AmaZulu and City are the other teams that are level on points but have an inferior goal difference compared to Amakhosi.

If Kaizer Chiefs finishes eight, Mamelodi Sundowns will sure be waiting next season. The Brazilians have already wrapped up the league and are aiming to finish the season with a record 78 points.

The pressure is on Cavin Johnson and his men to deliver next weekend as the league goes into the final round of games. The former Platinum Stars mentor has only won just two matches this year. Amakhosi have struggled to find form or any sort of rhythm in the second half of the season. With six points collected from five games, Chiefs are just nine points above relegation. Luckily, the four-time PSL champions are safe from relegation but might not finish in the top eight.

Kaizer Chiefs flirting with Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of next season

Up next is Cape Town Spurs. The Cape side have already been relegated and have nothing to play for except for pride. Amakhosi have already beaten Spurs in the first round but it’s a different ball game next weekend. A win for Spurs might give them a boost and confidence going back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Some of the players also want to impress and get signed by PSL teams.

Despite the possibility of qualifying for MTN8 and facing Sundowns once again, Kaizer Chiefs need to end the season positively. Failure to qualify for the top eight might be disastrous for the club. With a new coach expected to take over, the MTN8 trophy might be a motivation the players need.

Amakhosi need a convincing win to secure top 8

If Chiefs beat Spurs by a good score, they qualify for the top eight, but a draw most likely won’t be enough.
