MTN Foundation opens inclusive tech hub

Kampala, Uganda | Patricia Akankwatsa | MTN Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Uganda, has partnered with Tunaweza Foundation to launch an inclusive technology hub for persons living with different abilities. The hub, equipped with 10 computers, free internet connection for a year, and backup computer power valued at 65 million Ugandan shillings, aims to bridge the digital divide and empower individuals with disabilities.

The partnership aligns with MTN Uganda’s commitment to digital inclusion, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has access to the transformative power of technology. The inclusive tech hub will provide a safe and accessible space for persons living with different abilities to learn new skills, connect with others, and participate fully in the digital world.

“We believe that technology can be a powerful tool for empowerment, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone, including persons living with different abilities, has the opportunity to benefit from its advantages,” said Augustine Lule regional business manager, Kampala at MTN Uganda.

“By partnering with Tunaweza Foundation, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable digital society,”

Tunaweza Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting education and empowerment, expressed its gratitude for MTN Uganda’s support.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to empower individuals with disabilities,” remarked Victo Nalule, Executive Director of Tunaweza Foundation.

“By providing them with the essential tools and resources, we are not only bridging the digital divide but also fostering a more inclusive and accessible digital landscape, adding that; We are excited to collaborate with MTN to ensure that this inclusive tech hub becomes a catalyst for positive change and a beacon of hope for the disability community,”

The hub which is located at Tunaweza Foundation in Najjanakumbi, symbolizes a pivotal moment in the journey towards a more equitable and inclusive digital society.

Jackie Kwesiga the country director of Christian Blind Mission Uganda said that the innovations that will emerge from this hub will have a profound impact on the lives of people with different abilities, empowering them to overcome barriers, participate fully in society, and realize their full potential.

The hub will provide a training curriculum that is meticulously tailored to meet the unique needs and abilities of individuals with different abilities, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to learn and succeed.

“Our comprehensive computer training program is designed to equip participants with a solid foundation in computer fundamentals, proficiency in essential software applications, and the digital literacy skills necessary to excel in today’s technology-driven world,” said Jamila Mayanja the CEO of Smart Girls Foundation, Uganda.

She added that the trainees will be certified by the Directorate of Industrial Technology (DIT) upon passing to be able to compete in the employment world.

Tunaweza Foundation hopes at least 100 persons to benefit from this project per year.

By providing these resources, the MTN Foundation and Tunaweza Foundation hope to equip persons living with different abilities with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the digital age.

The launch was graced by Ellen Masi the U.S. Mission public affairs counsellor who thanked Tunaweza Foundation for its efforts in ensuring inclusivity.
