Mother of 8, caged by husband for being a witch, rescued in Delta

A mother of eight, identified simply as Gladys and caged for alleged witchcraft for over three years by the husband, Ame Edjeketa, 41, has been rescued in Delta state.

The husband suspect has also been arrested by men of the Delta State Police Command.

The victim was rescued on Tuesday and is currently receiving medical care at a government hospital in Orerokpe, administrative headquarters of Okpe council area, where the incident occurred.

A Facebook account given by rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, claim that the husband decided to lock her up in their compound, for being a witch.

According to the account, she was impregnated by the husband and gave birth to three of the eight children, while she was caged.

A Facebook post shared by Gwamnishu, states thus: “accused of witchcraft and caged for more than 3 years in Orerokpe, Delta state.

“She spent the last four years of her life locked up by her supposed husband. She was peeing and defecating in the same room where he fed her bread. Not the regular sweetened bread though.

“She had 8 children for the man, three of which she had while she was locked up by him in Orerokpe community.”

When contacted by The Nation, Gwamnishu restated that the husband had accused the wife of witchcraft due to some happenings in the family.

He disclosed that the eight children, all less than 16 years of age, are still at their father’s residence in Orerokpe.

He added that his team, Behind Bars Initiative, is working with the Police to locate the family of the woman in Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North council area in the state.

“It is only the man that knows the (woman’s family) house. But he is being detained. She is from Ozoro,” he said.

The Delta State Police spokesperson, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, while confirming the development, stated that the husband said she was “insane”.

“Yes, the husband said the woman is insane and he had taken her to many herbal homes to no avail. He also took her to her family and the family rejected her.

“So he had no option than to take her back home and he has been nursing her. Since the report came in, the woman has been admitted, while the man is in Police custody,” DSP Onovwakpoyeya said.
