2 min read

The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine has today received a donation of 2 blood analyzer machines from Star Pharmaceuticals and Abbort Diagnostics.

The machines are of I-2000 make, from the United States and are valued at about one billion shillings.

Ani Prajith, the director head of sales and marketing of Star Pharmaceuticals and Phillips Pharmaceuticals Uganda Ltd said that the machine is an automated one and helps in the screening of blood with a high technology.

“This is very important for the country because we are talking about automation. Blood tests and results are very critical if they come from a safety profile. These machines help to give us a complete automated output on diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B, and syphilis. Along with that, it also helps in anti body testing on covid-19,” he said.

Upon receiving the donation, Dr Atwine thanked Star Pharmaceuticals and Abbort for the machines. “The machines will be installed at Uganda Blood Transfusion Services to improve quality care in providing blood. I believe that they will work well into improving the quality testing of blood,” she said.

Dr Dorothy Kyeyune Byabazaire, the Executive Director Uganda Blood Transfusion Services said that screening blood is important and therefore the machines will serve the purpose.

“This donation is timely because it’s automated. We are now able to test blood and provide results in a short time. This means that we can give safe blood to those who need it,” she said.

She revealed that most contributors of blood have been school children and when the lockdown was effected, they resorted to communities to get blood.

“The biggest challenge is that what we get from communities is not adequate to be able to meet hospital blood demand. So, we encourage many people above the age of 17 to donate blood and be able to save lives of mothers, children, malaria, Sickle Cell and cancer patients,” she said.
