Meet 17-yr-old Arsenal midfielder, Ethan Nwaneri who bagged brace in Carabao cup

Arsenal youngster, Ethan Nwaneri made a name for himself, shining like a million star as the Gunners whitewashed Bolton Wanderers 5-1 in the third round of Carabao Cup at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Nwaneri scored a brace to earn Arsenal a qualification place, netting the second goal via Raheem Sterling’s assist in the 37th minute and further increased the lead four minutes into the second half.

However, the trio of Declan Rice, Sterling and German international, Kai Havertz make up the other goalscorers, while Aaron Collins slotted in Bolton’s only goal seven minutes before the hour mark.

“I’m buzzing. I’m so happy to have helped the team go through to the next round and I’m just ready for whatever’s next,” Ethan Nwaneri said commenting on his performance after the game.

On his part, the manager of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta acknowledged that the wonderkid has improved, noting that he plays with a lot of confidence that is required at a big club.

His words: “He’s improving daily. You can tell he’s playing without pressure, with confidence, and making decisions that show the boy is ready at this level. Today, he had a really strong performance, and I’m happy to see that.”

Born March 2007 in Enfield, England, Nwaneri joined Arsenal at the age of 8 and played for the youth teams until the 2022/2023 season, before featuring for the senior team, replacing Fabio Vieira in a Premier League tie against Brentford with few minutes left on the clock same season.

He also made a league appearance for the side last season – and has had two games under his belt so far this season, once in the league and the other in a cup game, where he was a force to be reckoned with, thus bringing him into the limelight.

The midfielder, who is of Nigerian descent (Igbo) has equally made some international appearances, donning the jersey of England at the 2023 UEFA European U-17 Championship and 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He also made the English team in the UEFA European U-17 Championship in 2024 – scoring three (3) goals in the competition.

The 17-year-old, known for his creativity coupled with defensive abilities, has registered 17 goals in 36 games across all competitions for England at the youth level.
