Mbale City Mayor-elect Vows to Fight Individualism among Leaders
Cassim Namugali, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate who triumphed in the recently concluded Mbale City mayoral elections, has revealed that his administration will kick off with eliminating individualism and selfishness among leaders to ensure effective services delivery.
Speaking to journalists upon being declared the winner, Namugali noted that extending services to people after the leaders have explored their individual gains has retarded Mbale’s growth because, according to him, leaders are not devoted to community development but themselves.
“Leaders should not be looking at what they are benefiting from something but rather what the entire community gets, they are meant to help the community,” he said.
Namugali was declared winner by Charles Robero, the Mbale City Returning Officer as the first City Mayor replacing the incumbent Mutwalibi Zandya Mafabi, whom he defeated during the FDC primaries last year.
He scored 32,591 votes, followed by the Vincent Magombe from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) with 11,531 votes.
Abdu Magoola Nandaga who contested on an independent ticket held the third position with 5,555 votes while Zandya held the fourth with 5,526 votes.
Other candidates were William Massai with 3,172 votes, Abbas Wetaka Wadala of the National Unity Platform (NUP) with 2,740 votes, Godfrey Wanyama with 2,524 votes, Harshim Mwenyi with 1,250 votes while Kasim Wodero trailed with 200 votes.
Nandaga, one of the independent candidates called upon Namugali to consider working together with the losers to develop the City. He also pointed out that he (Namugali) should start with finding a long lasting solution for the sewerage and garbage problems in Mbale.
“The winner should start with the garbage and sewerage issues which are choking the City and the old buildings should either be renovated or reconstructed,” he said.
Namugali told journalists that his leadership will focus on developing the road networks, finding solutions for sewerage and garbage problems and implementing the upcoming projects for purposes of developing the City.
“This time round, we are testing the corporate way of governing the city and I hope this will be possible when we work together,” he said.
