Marumo Gallants get BYE in CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round as 50 teams enter

The draw for the 2022/23 CAF Interclub competitions preliminary rounds will be conducted on Tuesday, 9 August in Cairo, Egypt at 16:00 (SA time).

This draw will mark the beginning of a journey to the 2022/23 season of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Wydad Athletic Club are the reigning CAF Champions League champions.

Another Moroccan club, RS Berkane, are the defending champions of the CAF Confederation Cup, having won the trophy twice in three years.

In total, 58 teams are entered in the CAF Champions League, two of which are from South Africa, namely Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City FC.

Mamelodi Sundowns have a bye in the preliminary round, while Cape Town City will learn the identity of their opponents on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in the CAF Confederation Cup, Marumo Gallants and Royal AM will fly the flag for Mzansi along with 48 other teams.

Marumo Gallants have been afforded a bye in the preliminary round, but Royal AM will need to get past an as yet unidentified foe to progress to the tournament proper.

The preliminary round is scheduled for September and the Round of 32 for October – both over two legs – and the 16 survivors advance to the group stage, which begins next February.

The CAF Confederation Cup, which has an additional qualifying round, pitting Round of 32 winners against Champions League Round of 32 losers in November.

Preliminary rounds’ dates:

First round (Home/Away): 9-11 September / 16-18 September 2022

Second round (Home/Away): 7-9 October / 14-16 October 2022
