Marsabit County launches reconciliation program among communities

2 min read

Marsabit County Government has rolled out a ‘People to People Reconciliation Program’ in a bid to end perennial ethnic conflicts in the County.

In a partnership with Northern Rangelands Trust, the initiative seeks to to bring people together through engagement of Councils of elders, Religious leaders and their respective Community Conservancies.

Marsabit Governor Mohamed Ali Mohamud said the County has had its fair share of ethnic conflicts in recent years that have resulted in loss of lives.

He said it’s time for all stakeholders to focus their efforts in enhancing sustainable peace among communities in the County through reconciliation.

Mohamud said the program funded by USAID to the tune of Ksh 200 Million will cover five hotspot counties in the next three years.

More emphasis was put on Marsabit County, the largest County in Kenya, which also home to the highest number of ethnic communities.

The Governor said a substantial share of the resources will be channeled towards fostering peaceful coexistence among the Communities especially as the Country prepares for the 2022 general elections.

The other Counties earmarked for the program are Isiolo, Samburu, Baringo and West Pokot.

Northern Rangelands Trust Chief Executive Officer Tom Lalampaa said the three year program aims at peace building through community led grassroots initiatives such as peace ambassadors, peace committees, councils of elders, interfaith religious leaders as well as county and national government agencies such as the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) in preventing and mitigating ethnic conflicts in the five Counties.

Lalampaa noted that the overall goal of the program is to have a peaceful society that can protect and manage resources to improve their livelihood.

He said that both tiers of the government as well as other organizations need to be more proactive in peace building among pastoralist communities.
