Man remanded for stealing ECG property
The Weija Circuit Court yesterday remanded Michael Ofori, an unemployed man, in prison custody for stealing and causing unlawful damage to fuses fixed in the electricity distribution panels belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited.
The fuses are estimated at a value of GH¢15, 840.00.
The accused, popularly known as Sammy, 24, was charged with two counts of causing unlawful damage and stealing.
Ofori pleaded guilty to the charge of causing unlawful damage, and not guilty to stealing, when he appeared by the court, presided by Mr Joshua Caleb Abaidoo.
The accused is to appear again on November 27 this year. 2024.
Police Inspector Joseph Barabu, prosecuting, said the complainant in the case, Mohammed Ibrahim, spotted the accused within the fence of ECG’s transformer and distribution panel, at Ayigbe Town, in the Ga South Municipality, removing fuses from the panel with a plier.
The accused, according to the prosecution, escaped from the scene upon seeing the complainant, leaving behind his booty and tools used for the operation.
Insp Barabu said that the complainant went to the ECG office at Bortianor, to alert personnel of the incident, and handed over the items to them. The prosecution said that the complainant chanced on accused the following day, and instigated his arrest.
Insp Barabu stated that accused was handed over to the police at New Weija and upon interrogation, he (accused) confessed to removing 12 fuses from the distribution panel.
The prosecution said accused led the police to other ECG installations in the area, where he had previously stolen unspecified number of fuses.
