Man electrocuted while attempting to vandalise transformer in Lagos

Tragedy struck on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, on September 1, 2024 as an unidentified man was electrocuted in an attempt to vandalize a PHCN transformer.
According to reports filed at the Lagos State Police Command, the incident occurred at around 4:02 AM, when a security officer on duty at a company located near the transformer witnessed the event.
It was gathered that the officer, was on guard duty at the company when he noticed the unknown individual climbing the gate adjacent to the transformer.
The man, suspected to be attempting to tamper with or vandalize the electrical equipment, was tragically electrocuted. He fell into the compound, where he died instantly.
The Lagos Police were promptly alerted, and a team from the Anti-Crime Patrol was dispatched to the scene. The team conducted a thorough investigation, documenting the site and taking photographs of the scene. The PHCN office was also contacted regarding the incident.
Speaking on the incident, Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the fatal electrocution and emphasized the dangers of illegal activities involving electrical installations. *“The individual, whose identity remains unknown, was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a PHCN transformer. His remains have been taken to the mortuary, and we are conducting further investigations,” SP Hundeyin stated.
He also warned against acts of vandalism, particularly those involving high-voltage electrical equipment, which pose grave dangers to life and property. SP Hundeyin called for heightened awareness and vigilance in the community, urging residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary as efforts continue to identify him and notify his next of kin.
