An Mpumalanga woman’s life is hanging by a thread after narrowly surviving a horror attack by her husband. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province, the 43-year-old man set her and their two daughters on fire.
The incident is said to have occurred at Zwelisha (Pienaar) outside Nelspruit on Tuesday, 10 November 2020.
“According to the reports, in the evening of Tuesday, 10 November 2020, the man and his wife had a heated argument subsequent to which he poured petrol at their rented room, set it alight with the three inside. The man then went into hiding whilst neighbours came to the rescue of the victims and took them to hospital for treatment with severe burn wounds,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

Mdhluli said police rushed to the scene after they were notified about the incident. Upon arrival, they opened a case and launched an extensive manhunt for the suspect.
The two girls, aged nine and 11 years-old, succumbed to the severe injuries they had sustained in the incident. The suspect is believed to have taken his own life after he was found hanging by a tree outside his parents’ house.
“After news broke of their untimely death, the man was found on Friday hanging under a tree next to his parent’s house. The police and the medical personnel were informed about the matter and upon arrival at the scene, the man was certified dead,”

Police in the province are currently investigating two counts of murder, attempted murder, arson as well as an inquest.
“The police management in Mpumalanga has strongly condemned the incident and made a clarion call for members of the public to seek assistance from social workers whenever they face challenges in their relationships rather than resorting to ending one’s life or that of their loved ones,” he further said.
