Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to be pushing ahead to secure the services of a top transfer target for Kaizer Chiefs.
Sundowns have engaged Stellenbosch FC on the possibility of signing Junior Mendieta ahead of the next season, according to the latest reports.
It was recently reported that Sundowns are preparing to part ways with midfielder Haashim Domingo, having failed to agree terms with him on a new deal. Now, moving as swiftly and purposefully as they are known to, the Brazilians went straight to Stellenbosch to gauge the possibility of a deal for their key man.
Chiefs were credited with the early interest in Mendieta, in fact they’re thought to be two years into their interest in the Argentine star. Club sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior has also come out publicly to confirm the club’s interest in the player saying: “ Of course Mendieta is down to Stellenbosch’s strategic outlook for him. We know he is contracted and I think as time goes on we will see who where we are. He is a top talent. We would like to have him, we would like to have (Khanyisa Mayo) all these are great players. Our supporters mentioning their names, shows they understand the game, but the coach and his staff will give us an indication of their requirements, we don’t sign the players and present them to the coach, the coaches will guide us on this one” to Radio200.
But now according to SABC Sport, Sundowns are now the favourites to sign Mendieta, not Chiefs.
Sundowns to beat Chiefs to Mendieta?
“Sundowns are now ready to bid for Mendieta, who had a phenomenal season, helping Stellies to a sixth-place finish on the Premiership table last month. It’s understood Mendieta has a buy-out clause, which isn’t likely to cost below R10-million for any suitors to lure him away from his current employers.” Wrote the publication.
This could be a disaster for Chiefs who are seriously lacking in chance creation and goals. Mendieta scored 10 goals and assisted nine in 31 games last season, and looking at those stats, is exactly what Amakhosi need.
