Mamelodi Sundowns crowned CAF Women’s Champions League champs

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are the new African champions following their 2-0 win over Hasaacas FC in the CAF Women’s Champions League final on Friday.

Coach Jerry Tshabalala made two changes from the Sundowns team that beat Malabo Kings on penalties in the semi-finals with Thalea Smidt and Andiswe Mgcoyi cracking the nod.

Sundowns took their 1-0 lead into the dressing room, and Tshabalala knew that his charges needed to defending better in the second half.

Both sides matched each other in the second half, with Hasaacas defending better this time around.

However, Sundowns, through their persistence, doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Mgcoyi went one-on-one with the goalkeeper before easily slotting the ball home.

Sundowns goalkeeper Andile Dlamini had some work to do 12 minutes from time as she parried a Perpetual Agyekum free-kick over the crossbar to keep the scoreline at 2-0.

Sundowns would finish the game with 10 players after Regina Mogolola was given her marching orders in the dying minutes of the game.

The red card came after Mogolola’s lunging tackle was reviewed by VAR, but it was too little too late for Hasaacas to launch a comeback as Sundowns walked away 2-0 winners.

It is also worth noting that Sundowns won the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League title without losing a game.
