Makazole Mapimpi preparing for Springbok exit

Speedster Makazole Mapimpi believes he won’t gain selection in the Springboks’ next World Cup squad because of his waning prowess and declining pace.

VETERAN WINGER NEARING END OF TEST CAREER

The 34-year-old speedster is currently on tour with the Springboks in Europe and thanks to his excellent run of form is likely to feature in Sunday’s Test against Scotland in Edinburgh.

And yet despite said form, the two-time World Cup gold medallist admits that reaching the 2027 Rugby World Cup might be a step too far for him.

“I think I’m good now, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make another World Cup. I’m not saying I won’t, but I don’t think so,” Mapimpi told a group of travelling South African reports in Edinburgh.

“There are a lot of players that have come in now, and it’s a good thing for the team. There is going to be generation after generation, and for me, it’s about assisting the players, especially if I’m not playing,” the Springboks ace explained.

For now, Mapimpi, who has scored 30 tries in 45 Tests, for the Springboks, says he is making the most of whatever time he has left in international arena.

“I want to keep at this level until I retire,” the veteran said.

“I don’t want to disappoint myself and the coaches as well,” he reflected.
