Mahama slams Nana Addo over corruption record

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, President John Dramani Mahama continues to make corruption a talking point ahead of the election by taking a swipe at President Akufo-Addo for his inability to deal with allegedly corrupt officials in his government.

He criticised President Akufo-Addo for exonerating officials implicated in corruption scandals rather than prosecuting them and stressed that combating corruption is key for national development.

In addition, he reiterated concerns that President Akufo-Addo is running a family and friends government.

“They have shown that they came into office for themselves alone. Nana Akufo-Addo said if you came into office to make money, his government is not the place to be and you should be in the private sector,” Mr. Mahama said at a rally at Kakpagyili in the Tamale South constituency of the Northern Region.

“Look at all his relatives making money, they are not in the private sector. They are ministers and occupy government positions and yet he doesn’t have the nerve to sack anybody.”

“When people engage in corruption, you suspend them and the next time you see they are back and he has tied the hands of all the corruption institutions,” Mr. Mahama said.

He also expressed surprise that President Akufo-Addo did not have a major reshuffle of his cabinet.

“A President who for four years has not done a reshuffle in his government. What kind of President is that?”

In earlier comments, Mr. Mahama said the conduct of the Akufo-Addo administration has left Ghanaians numb to corruption.

“We are too shocked by the corruption of the Akufo-Addo administration that nothing shocks us any more so now when huge amounts of corruption happen, people don’t have the energy to talk about it again,” Mr. Mahama said.
