LP crisis: Abure-led NEC to meet, prepare response for Obi, Otti

There are strong indications that the Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, is preparing a strong response to what it considers an affront by the party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
Obi and Otti had convened a stakeholder ‘meeting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital last week.
At the end of the expanded stakeholders’ meeting, the two leaders announced the formation of an interim leadership for the party with former Finance Minister, Nanedi Usman as chairperson.
Already, the party secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, is said to have sent out invitations to members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), loyal to Abure to attend a crucial meeting, in Abuja, on Monday.
Although the agenda of the Abuja NEC meeting is shrouded in secrecy, it was gathered that the meeting is likely to discuss steps to be taken to mitigate what some describe as “Umuahia rebellion” and possible disciplinary measures to be taken against “ring leaders.”
National Publicly Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, could not be reached for comments as he is said to have traveled out
of the country.
However, top ranking party source familiar with the development confirmed that plans for the NEC meeting “are in top gear.”
The source said, “NEC will meet tomorrow to discuss the state of the nation and of course, the Umuahia insurrection.
“We are a political party built on the respect for the rule of law. All members no matter how highly placed must be guided in their conduct and utterances by the party’s constitution.”
