The duo helped secure the country a spot in the Top 8 after they both scored goals in their decider match on Sunday 4 December.

On Sunday, France secured a 3-1 victory over Poland in their World Cup match, thanks to two goals by Kylian Mbappe and one by Olivier Giroud.

And the occasion signalled something special for the players – Mbappe broke the record for the player with the most World Cup goals scored before the age of 24 – previously held by Brazil’s Pele.

And Giroud also broke a record – earning him the title of France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 2 international goals in 116 appearances for the country.

Revelling in their friendship and love of football, the duo embraced in a very dramatic display of affection, which has gone viral.

TWEEPS ARE AMUSED BY WORLD CUP SCENE

On social media, football fans compared Mbappe and Giroud’s embrace to a scene from The Notebook.

The 2004 rom-com – inspired by a Nicholas Sparks novel – starred Ryan Reynolds and Rachel McAdams as two lovers who rekindle their romance after years apart.

Here’s what tweeps had to say about the cute moment:

@Maxmouse18: “A better love story than The Notebook”

@habibisira: “Mbappe and Giroud are giving the Notebook with 365 days vibe”

@His_Mel: “Find someone who looks at you the same way Mbappe looks at Giroud”

@ScrambledMeggs: “If the love doesn’t feel like the love between Mbappé & Giroud, I don’t want it”
