Liverpool claimed their first home league victory since December thanks to a dramatic late winner from Trent Alexander-Arnold that sealed a 2-1 comeback win over Aston Villa.
Ollie Watkins had given Villa the lead just before half time despite Liverpool being on top in terms of the balance of play.
Liverpool claim first home league win of 2021
Mohamed Salah was on hand to equalise just before the hour mark as Liverpool finally turned pressure into a goal.
Alexander-Arnold stepped up to smash a low shot beyond Emiliano Martinez in the Aston Villa goal after the keeper had denied Thiago.
Liverpool had seen a first half goal from Roberto Firmino disallowed after a long VAR review and it seemed like it was going to be another frustrating day for the Reds in front of an empty Anfield.
Alexander-Arnold bounces back
Alexander-Arnold was dropped from the England squad last month and was at fault for Real Madrid’s second goal as Liverpool lost the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against the Spanish giants 3-1 on Tuesday, but he showed character and resolve to step up and score a crucial goal that gets his team back in the hunt for a top-four finish.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson suffered some shakey moments again having endured a horror night on Tuesday as well and looked to be at fault for Watkins opener.
Jurgen Klopp made good use of his bench, introducing Thiago Alcantara, Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri in a bid to claim a winner and the changes made the desired impact.
Martinez produced a stunning save to deny Thiago turning home a Shaqiri cross, but the loose ball came to Alexander-Arnold, who with England boss Gareth Southgate in attendance, fired a timely reminder of the quality he possesses.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was eager to put to bed questions of Alexander-Arnold’s quality.
Speaking after the match, Klopp said: “We can stop that chat, everybody agrees, even Gareth Southgate that Trent is an oustanding player. It’s now about his decision about what he is doing for the [England] squad, we said that but we don’t have to talk about that every week really.”
Klopp was happy with the effort and relieved that things appeared to be turning around for the defending champions.
