LIBERIA: “We Are Pleased With BMMC” – 3 Communities In Grand Cape Mount County Reject ICM Mediation

Three communities in Cape Mount County where Bea Mountain is operating, Darblo, Larr, and Lajor…… have expressed their total rejection of any form of mediation with the Independent Complaints Mechanism (ICM).

It can be recalled that three clans entered into a memorandum of understanding with the company in the past to provide USD150,000 yearly to enhance development and livelihood projects. This has been ongoing for some time. But a non-government organization-Rights and Rice Foundation held meetings with the communities and informed them that they would raise issues with the company.

In one of the letters sent to Rights and Rice Foundation by the communities, a copy seen by this paper said: “we write to inform you that our disagreement with BMMC in the past was for social and economic benefits. We embarked upon parallel processes including you while we were in the struggle.”

“We also constituted a legal committee to hire a lawyer and later formed the land representatives, the team through a government of Liberia led negotiation with BMMC and now we have put together framework documents which are sufficient and effectively addresses our point of disagreement.”

“The framework document is currently being used as working tools and we are happily working with it,” the letter further said.

The letter was signed by stakeholders of the communities including chiefs, youth leaders, women leaders, and representatives from Gold Camp, Kinjor, and other places across the affected communities.

The three communities said that they were no longer interested in any form of mediation and are happy with the level of cooperation and support Bea Mountain is currently giving to each of them on a yearly basis.
