Liberia: Senate Pro Tempore Karnga-Lawrence Urges AME University Graduates to Embrace Patriotism and Integrity
Monrovia – Pro Tempore Karnga-Lawrence, speaking as the commencement speaker at the 33rd graduation ceremony of the African Methodist Episcopal University, encouraged graduates to embrace values of honesty, patriotism, integrity, hard work, and respect for others. She highlighted the importance of these principles in shaping their future and the next generation.
In her address, she stated that issues like hatred, greed, and wickedness are not solely government concerns but national challenges that undermine Liberia’s progress.
“Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much wealth you accumulate if those around you suffer from hunger and illness. Our society and democracy thrive only when we consider not just our own needs but also the well-being of others. We have the power to change this reality. If Liberia is to improve, it will collectively depend on each of us,” she said.
Recognizing Liberia’s challenges, Karnga-Lawrence underscored the need for collective action, urging graduates to play their part in achieving meaningful change. “It is good to embrace the power of a collective resolve. The fading values we see around us can be reignited through our actions and our commitment to one another,” she added.
She also painted a vision for Liberia where integrity and community bonds create a society built on compassion, unity, and shared hope. “Imagine a Liberia where integrity reigns, and the bonds of community are strengthened by our shared humanity. This vision can only become a reality if each of us painstakingly decides to prioritize compassion over greed, unity over division, and hope over despair.”
Karnga-Lawrence called on graduates to be inspired by their potential to drive positive change, saying, “Together, we can be the catalysts for change that resonates through generations, lighting the path toward a society defined by strength, compassion, and shared success.”
In recognition of her leadership and accomplishments, the university’s board of trustees, upon recommendation from the faculty senate, awarded Senator Karnga-Lawrence an honorary Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree at the commencement ceremony.
