Montserrado County Electoral District #1 Representative, Rugie Yatu Barry, has broken ground for the construction of a mini market structure for local marketers in Borlah, Upper Careysburg.

The ground-breaking ceremony, which was held over the weekend in the district, was attended by other lawmakers from the House of Representatives, including Representatives Thomas Goshuah, Prince Toles and Anthony Williams among others.

The mini market construction, when completed, will benefit over 50 market women who sell their fruits in makeshift structures, the lawmaker said.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Representative Barry acknowledged the enormous challenges faced by market women during the rainy and dry seasons as well as economic constraints confronting the Liberian market.

“I feel the pains market women go through particularly in Borlah and that is why I see the need for a market to be built for the people of this area. We’re happy by the warm reception from our dear and strong local marketers, and we recognize the significant role you play in our economy,” she stated.

Representative Barry further highlighted other difficulties experienced by market women in rural Montserrado while cultivating the fruits from their farms and gardens. The lawmaker indicated that they need a better place to sell their fruits without spoiling due to rain or sun.

“I know what it takes for the rain or sun to spoil your market just because there is nowhere for you to put your fruits after taking those from the garden or farm but this project will start immediately as of next week to ease your stress,” Representative Barry noted.

She further reiterated her appreciation to her constituents for the confidence reposed in her during the 2023 representative election.

The lawmaker pledged her office commitment to always working with residents of the district in the interest of the constituency. “My arms are open to embrace everyone despite their political affiliation, religious background or ethnicity”.

In a brief remark, several local marketers, local leaders and other residents thanked Representative Barry for the intervention. “We are very happy today to see the groundbreaking of a new market in our area and we want to say a very big thank you to Hon. Barry; we can assure that we will take care of the facility when constructed”.
