Liberia: ‘Not ready to govern’ – CDC Chair Recounts UP’s ‘Missteps and Unfulfilled Promises’

According to Kowo, the Boakai-Koung administration has miserably failed to deliver on its promises made to the Liberian people in its first year.

Monrovia – The Chairman of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Janga Kowo has descended on the ruling Unity Party (UP) of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai led-government for its numerous missteps in steering the state of affairs of the country and failure to fulfill promises made to the Liberian people.

According to Kowo, the Boakai-Koung administration has miserably failed to deliver on its promises made to the Liberian people in its first year.

He referred to the US$22M for road rehabilitation, 285 yellow machines, 300 marcopolo buses, the recent US$25M NEKOTECH scholarship scheme, amongst others.

Kowo made these assertions when he served as Induction Officer at the Third National Convention of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE) held at the Baptist Seminary in Paynesville, outside Monrovia on Thursday, November 28.

He stressed that the unavailability or fulfillments of these projects clearly show that the Boakai-Koung administration cannot do well in governing the country.

He noted that this is also a clear demonstration of President Boakai’s “inability and ineptitude” to govern.

“The UP government came to power by accident and some circumstances. You can see the crisis at the National Legislature; the country is leading to a constitutional crisis because the UP government is bent on removing a CDC Speaker.”

Kowo pointed out that this is evidenced by the fact that the executive is still doing business with and providing security for members of the majority bloc at the House of Representatives.

He maintained that the clear violation of the rule of law by the executive allegedly attempting to remove a sitting Speaker runs contrary to the Liberian constitution.

He said under the UP government, peaceful Liberians were killed at the Bea Mountain Mining Company in Kinjor, while the CDC headquarters was invaded twice by armed security officers on August 6 and 22 this year.

Kowo stressed that this clearly shows that President Boakai is not ready to govern the country.

“We are here today to tell you that we are organized to ensure that the Unity Party is booted from power democratically.”

This, he said, will require proper planning and collaboration.

According to him, the political base of the CDC is strong and as such, its constituent political parties should also be strong to ensure that the UP does not retain the presidency come 2029.

Kowo indicated that Liberia’s democracy will grow if political parties are stronger.

“The flagrant disregard and naked disregard of the Liberian constitution, the violation of the rule of law by the current Unity Party government is a testament to you that their coming in power was an error.”

He said the use of the UP 12 years stay in power to have the party re-elected was a complete miscalculation as civil servants are being dismissed on a regular basis.

Kowo claimed that the UP government is also witch-hunting its citizens as evidenced by its move to block the appointment of Ambassador Dee Maxwell Kemayah to serve as Resident Representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to neighboring Sierra Leone.

He said the government’s alleged action violates the Liberian constitution which amongst other things guarantees the right of citizens to employment.

He maintained that though the government does not have the authority to appoint ECOWAS Ambassadors, it continues to interfere to veto the appointment of Ambassador Kemayah to the position for selfish political reasons.

Kowo emphasized that the alleged action of the government is an anti-reconciliation move intended to victimize its own citizens.
