Liberia: Nimba County Local Authorities Received Poor Reception

MONROVIA – Local government appointees for Nimba County received a very poor reception from Nimbaians when they entered the City of Ganta on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

Even though the local county authorities have not been confirmed by the Liberian Senate, they rushed to enter the county.

Our Nimba County correspondent has learned that the streets of Ganta were poorly attended despite the population of Nimbaians.

In the past, other local leaders of the county have been well received, but the story of Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono, Daniel Zekpeh (County Inspector), Peter Kangbay (Assistant Superintendent for Development), Dudley Debois (Assistant Superintendent for Fiscal Affairs), and Ganta City Mayor Samuel Hardt was different—they were poorly received by Nimbaians.

Prior to their arrival in the county, most Nimbaians, including partisans of the ruling Unity Party, expressed disappointment and frustration in President Boakai’s appointments.

According to them, those who fought to bring their party to power, whom the aggrieved partisans of the ruling party referred to as helpers, are the ones benefiting from their efforts.

A few days ago, Moses Ghicarn, the District Coordinator for the nine electoral districts, expressed disappointment and frustration, accusing Vice President Jeremiah Koung of focusing on the MDR party of Senator Prince Johnson and the Friends of Jeremiah (FOJ) to be the ones benefiting from appointments.

Printiss T.K. Domah, Nimba County chapter head of the ruling Unity Youth Congress, told journalists in the county that they, as partisans and Nimbaians, would not allow Vice President Jeremiah Koung and Nimba County Chairman Nelson Bearngar for what they referred to as bad leadership treatment toward them.

Both Moses Ghicarn, head of the district coordinators, and Printiss T.K. Domah, Ruling Party Nimba County Youth Congress, expressed disappointment and frustration in President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung for not being able to favor them with local government appointments.

Recently, Nimbaians threatened not to work with the various local authorities appointed in the county.

According to them, those appointed came as a result of Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s interest rather than the citizens’ interest.

Regarding Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono, they referred to her as an American citizen who has no idea about the county’s politics but has been in the United States for a long period of time.

Due to the very poor reception, citizens of the county were seen at the Jackie Guest House greeting and welcoming her alongside her team.

Daniel Nya Gboe and others were seen pledging their support to her rather than Nimbaians coming in huge numbers to welcome her.

She told a few citizens who had come to greet her that she didn’t come as a superintendent but rather to see the county.

Our Nimba County correspondent said she and her group were unable to tour other parts of the county but only Ganta.
