Mr. Weah was among many Liberians who took to social media to express their frustration and demand more support following Lone Star’s 2-1 home defeat to Equatorial Guinea in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In June of this year, the government approved over US$7 million to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) in the 2024 national budget, with US$150,000 allotted for national football, and grassroots sports development allotted US$1,230.

“This defeat highlights a persistent issue that cannot be ignored: the underfunding of our national team by the Government of Liberia,” he posted on Monday.

He alleged that the government has failed to provide adequate resources and support to players of the national team.

“It is disheartening to see the lack of adequate resources and support for our players who represent the pride and hope of our nation.”

Weah, who is a member of the Collaborating Football Stakeholders of Liberia, also alleged the poor management of the national team is a major factor to the poor results.

He lamented the continuous setback Liberia faces in its ongoing football journey to systemic failures that need immediate and decisive action. “The poor management of the national team by the Liberia Football Association (LFA) is also a major contributing factor to this outcome and this points to systemic failures that need immediate action to restore faith in Liberian football.”

Furthermore, Weah called on President Raji of LFA to take responsibility for the country’s failure and immediately resign from his position. “We need leaders who are genuinely committed to the development and success of our football, someone who will ensure that our national team receives the support it needs to excel on the international stage” he concluded.
