Liberia: Capitol Hill Engulfed in Violence as Alleged Plot to Unseat Speaker Koffa Fails

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Tension has escalated at the Liberian Capitol following reports that a group of lawmakers, led by Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah, had drafted a resolution aimed at removing Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. Speaker Koffa is currently part of President Joseph Boakai’s delegation on an official trip to Italy.

The conflict intensified when Representative Marvin Cole, backed by a group of pro-Koffa lawmakers, staffers, and security personnel, stormed the Capitol and locked the chamber doors to prevent the scheduled legislative session from proceeding.

A violent confrontation later erupted in the joint chambers of the House of Representatives as two opposing groups of lawmakers clashed. One faction, led by Rep. Cole, sought to block the session in response to reports that a group of dissenting lawmakers had signed a resolution to unseat Speaker Koffa. The opposing group, led by Representative Richard Koon, attempted to proceed with the session, but their efforts were disrupted when Representative Frank Saah Foko and his supporters forcefully intervened, halting the proceedings.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah has denied any involvement in the alleged plot to remove Speaker Koffa, stating that he and the Speaker remain on good terms. He attributed the growing tension to misinformation spread by some members of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

“I support Speaker Koffa and the CDC, and I urge my aggrieved colleagues to address their grievances peacefully instead of resorting to violence,” Fallah said, calling for calm and reconciliation among the party’s members.
