The Machakos County Assembly has passed a motion to develop a Level 5 hospital facility in Athi River town, Mavoko Sub-county of Machakos.
This was proposed during the eighth seating of Bunge Mashinani held in Athi River Polytechnic that was chaired by County Assembly Speaker Mrs. Florence Mwangangi.
During the seating, Mrs. Mwangangi observed the importance of quick implementation of strategies to commence the setting up of the hospital, owing to the high demand of medical services in the area. She called on the County Executives to ensure that the project is effectively completed.
“We have passed a momentous motion in this seating and it is expected that the County Executive that has the mandate and duty of implementing the resolutions of County Assembly will take up the matter seriously and hear the cry of the people of Athi River,” said Mrs. Mwangangi.
The motion was brought to the floor of the House by the area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Mr. Robert Kisini, following previous concerns raised by the residents.
Kisini had requested the County Government Executive led by Machakos County Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua, to prioritize the construction and work towards raising the standards of the Level 2 hospital facility in Athi River.
The MCA added that Athi River has only a Level 2 hospital which was initiated through the Community Development Fund budget many years ago, adding that having a better health facility in the area will be a milestone in combating diseases.
“Residents will be delighted to have a Level 5 health facility that addresses a variety of their health issues at lower costs. The population in Athi River necessitates the need to have more health facilities in the area,” argued Kisini.
He added that the town has a big population who are served by private hospitals that are expensive hence, disadvantaging most of the clients.
“It is true that the number of people living in Athi River is high and they are surrounded by private hospitals which aid in treating them but most of them cannot afford the money required for treatment,” Kisini noted.
Kisini called on other leaders to support him in ensuring that the residents have access to quality medical services where he remained hopeful that the health sector gets a reasonable amount of funding every year.
Kisini also applauded the County Government of Machakos for ensuring that the residents receive quality medication at a lower cost in addition to giving free drugs, lab services and other medical necessities to government hospitals.
He acknowledged the government for setting aside Sh41 million to facilitate free medical attention among other projects, including setting up cancer centres in the County.
Other MCAs led by Wiper nominated Member Ms. Margaret Mwikali Mbithi seconded the motion that the area needed a level 5 hospital facility owing to its big population and proximity to Nairobi.
“There is a need to have a Level 5 hospital in Athi River because of the large numbers. The residents also contribute in generating income to our county and therefore have a right to quality medical services,” said Ms. Mbithi.
