KTA Appoints First Senior Partners

KTA Advocates (Formerly Karuhanga Tabaro &Associates) has announced the appointment of Edgar Tabaro and Justus Karuhanga as its first Senior Partners.

As Senior Partner, Justus Karuhanga will have the responsibility for delivering the firm’s new strategy in line with KTA’s core values, leading the firm’s international and Strategic Partnerships.

Justus specializes in public-private partnerships, corporate and commercial law, land conveyancing, investment advisory, electoral law and was called to the bar in 2001.

He has previously acted as Private Secretary-Legal to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda from 2003-2009. Justus has also served as Secretary, Commission of Inquiry investigating land relations in Uganda, Principal State Attorney in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of South Ankole of the Province of the Anglican Church of Uganda.

Justus Karuhanga, described his election as “an absolute privilege to have been elected by the partners to take on such an important role for KTA’s future.”

“The past few years have shown what we can achieve, and I see many opportunities to work with the partners and stakeholders internationally to build on that success.” he said.

Meanwhile, Tabaro said it was “truly an honor to have been given the opportunity to take on the role of KTA’s Senior Partner for regional growth.”

“KTA has over the last few years enjoyed many exciting changes and with a clear vision and strategy, my role will be to help us deliver on that strategy over the next 10 years whilst ensuring that our values and ethos remain at the forefront of everything we do.” he said

Tabaro will be responsible for driving regional synergies as head of KTA’s regional practice with a specific focus on business entry into Burundi and the EAC’s latest entrant DRC.

He specializes in Intellectual Property, Corporate Law, Construction Law, Insolvency, Energy, Oil and Gas and was called to the bar in 2002. Edgar has had a distinguished career in academia as a Law School Dean, Senior Lecturer in Law with over 20 academic publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been an external examiner at Makerere Law School and the Bar Course at LDC.

Edgar has also served on a number of boards including the Uganda Communications Commission, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation wherein he was its inaugural Managing Director and presently serves as Company Secretary of Agribusiness Development Center, a Rabo Bank entity in Uganda. He has advised on various legislation on Intellectual Property in Uganda as the lead on behalf of Uganda Law Society and was retained by the EU to advise the Nigerian and Ghana governments on Geographical Indications for Pepa Yam, Kola nut and cocoa as well as kente clothe respectively.

On his part, Asmahaney Saad, Managing Partner of KTA said the announcement of the Senior Partners was a significant strategic step for KTA “as we further our vision of being the ‘Go To Regional Law firm of choice’.”
