Hundreds of people were displaced by mudslides which ripped through Mt Muhabura in Kisoro District on Monday evening.
The affected families are now call for government to resettle them.
John Mftitumukiza, the Kisoro District councillor for Nyarusiza Sub County, says that at least nine people were killed and over 50 others left homeless.
Dozens of houses were destroyed; 34 goats and 13 cows also died in the villages of Buzeyi, Kabare and Rukyere in Nyarusiza Sub County, following a heavy downpour.
Apolinari Ngaruye the LCII chairperson for Rukongi Parish, says that since Monday evening when the incident happened, no assistance has been given to the flood victims by the government.
Rescue efforts by Kisoro district authorities has since resulted in the recovery of up to 9 bodies.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that mudslides were experienced on the Rwandan side as well, although it wasn’t as devastating as was on the Ugandan side.
Meanwhile, State Minister for relief, disaster preparedness Esther Anyakun along with Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament and State Minister for Youth Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, are expected to visit Nyarusiza Sub County today to assess the damage and recommend to Government remedies to the persistent problem.
