Kigezi VHTs Call for Gov’t Motivation

Village health teams in Kisoro and Rukungiri districts have asked government to enroll them for monthly salaries, in return for the thankless work they do in mobilizing communities

Doreen Twizere, one of the VHTs in Gakoro village in Nyakabande Sub County says government needs to start paying them for their work, and also fast track the process of supplying them with work equipment like rain courts and boots.

“We are volunteers, the government should appreciate our input and pay us at least Shs 100,000 monthly,” she said.

Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, who has been touring the region thanked the local VHTs for making the Covid19 vaccination exercise a big success.

“The ministry of health appreciates the fact that VHTs have continued to be hardworking in ensuring that the government health projects are successful especially covid-19 vaccination,” said Ainebyoona.

He noted that the ministry of health has embarked on motivating VHTs by providing them with boots, containers, umbrellas, aprons, among other materials that can be used during the execution of their duties. He adds that the ministry is also considering including them on a monthly salary.

“We however ask them to be patient as the government figures out how to start paying them monthly salaries,” Ainebyoona added.
