Kigezi Leaders Praise Late Governor Mutebile at First Memorial Service

Kigezi leaders have hailed the Former Bank of Uganda Governor Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile for being a patriot, a unifier and promoter of culture in the region.

This was at the first memorial service held to celebrate the legacy and life of Prof Mutebile at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero on Monday.

John Patrick Amama Mbabazi the Former Prime Minister and childhood friend of Prof Mutebile praised the deceased for being at the helm of numerous interventions that lifted the economy of Uganda from the commodity scarcities, inflation and instabilities of the 1970s.

“I, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and Dr Amos Nzeyi had known Mutebile for over 6 decades, having gone to the same school, worked together in the struggle for political, economic liberation; and when we took government we worked closely together for nearly 40 years,” he said.

“My colleagues became distinguished in their fields and earned deserved titles for their work. Emmanuel became Prof Mutebile, Amos became Dr Amos Nzeyi, Ruhakana was always Dr Ruhakana Rugunda; its only me that didn’t acquire those tittles except of course if you know my other name Dr Karyaburo,” said Amama Mbabazi.

David Bahati, the Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry) praised Mutebile for initiating and sponsoring the historic visit which the king of Toro, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, made to Kigezi in 2019 saying that the visit of the monarch helped to cement ties and acceptability for the thousands of the Bakiga that continue to migrate to Toro for settlement

“He followed the path of Paulo Ngorogoza and was always proud of his culture even when he was a patriot. He exhibited the values he learnt as a kid from Kijuguta, Kabale: values of hard work, openness and honesty. He was a doer and a giver. He did a lot for this country and gave so much to his motherland”. Said Bahati.

The Minister added that under his stewardship at the Central Bank, the Uganda Shilling remained stable amidst the storms of global economic turbulences
