Kibera Fashion Week: Celebrating fashion from matatu rooftops
The Kibera Fashion Week (KFW) was held this past Sunday in a stunning display of sustainable and creative fashion.
Despite weather challenges, the event held at the Kibera Olympic Bus Terminus showcased the resilience and innovative spirit of local designers and artists.
Known for its unconventional venues, KFW transformed the bus terminus into an iconic raised runway, where attendees and photographers watched from the rooftops of matatus.
Initially planned as a two-day event from November 16th to 17th, the show was condensed into a single day due to heavy rains on Saturday.
However, this did not dampen the energy or enthusiasm of the participants and audience.
The event featured not just fashion but also a variety of creative activities, including film screenings, live music performances, art installations, and pop-up exhibitions.
Kibera Fashion Week has become an essential platform for showcasing the talents of local designers while emphasizing sustainability.
For its third edition, designers like Brillian Lutomia, Joyleen Chepngetich, Carlton Gandani, Piurius Ochieng, Sophie Barbier, Millicent Oluoch, Hellen Njenga, and Mariah Kwamboka presented collections that fused vibrant colours with eco-friendly and ethical fashion.
Many of the showcased pieces were crafted from unconventional materials such as recycled fabrics and locally sourced items, aligning with KFW’s emphasis on ethical production and environmental consciousness.
Beyond the glitz of the runway, Kibera Fashion Week plays a significant role in empowering the local community.
By integrating workshops and discussions around sustainable fashion, KFW challenges stereotypes about Kibera and proves that world-class creativity can thrive in any environment.
