Khanyisa Mayo reveals why he was unable to join Kaizer Chiefs

Former Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo has given more details on why he ended up not joining Kaizer Chiefs.

The 26-year-old Bafana Bafana forward joined Algerian side CR Belouizdad before the start of the current Betway Premiership. Before his big move, Mayo was heavily linked with a move to Amakhosi.

Speaking to Michael Morton on SoccerBeat, Mayo revealed why he was unable to join Kaizer Chiefs this season.

“Yes, there was a good chance of that happening,” Mayo said.

“What happened is that when I had just a contract with CR Belouizdad, that’s when Chiefs came knocking and they said they were willing to take out this amount of money for me,” he said.

The former Cape Town City star said Amakhosi’s offer came just an hour after finalizing his move to Algeria.

In August, Mayo’s agent Basia Michaels also said that Kaizer Chiefs were interested in signing Mayo, but were seconds too late to beat the offer from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. The striker has played six matches so far in North Africa but is yet to find the back of the net.

Mayo to Kaizer Chiefs was not too far off

Regarding his move to Algeria, Mayo said it was difficult to adjust to a new country but was motivated to work hard.

“You make things work because you have to live as a soccer player, it’s our job to provide for our families you know. It’s a big step for every individual who makes it out of the country you know, it’s not easy but we have to make it work.

“Football is a short-term career man, you don’t know what might happen tomorrow. You get a long-lasting injury so you have to use every opportunity you get,” he said.

If Mayo’s move fails to bear fruit, Kaizer Chiefs might look to bring him in next season.
