Kenyans urged to embrace free cancer screening amid rising cases

As world marks breast cancer awareness month Kenyans are being urged to take advantage of free cancer screenings available in the country.

The campaign comes amid rising cases of late-stage  cancer diagnoses, a trend that the healthcare provider hopes to reverse through early detection and timely treatment.

Speaking at the launch of a free cancer screening initiative by RFH Healthcare, Dr. Maxwel Okoth stressed the need for routine checkups to prevent life-threatening cancer cases.

“Routine health checkups, particularly annual cancer screenings, are crucial in identifying potential risks early. At RFH, we are dedicated to making these services accessible, so that more lives can be saved through early detection,” said Dr. Okoth.

“Cancer is not a death sentence. With proper awareness and proactive measures, up to 75% of new cases could be prevented,” he added.

His sentiments were echoed by Dr. Lalit Varadpande, an oncologist at RFH who expressed concern over the high number of patients presenting with advanced-stage cancer due to lack of awareness and high treatment costs.

“Cancers like breast, cervical, and prostate can be treated if diagnosed early. We urge Kenyans to adopt healthier lifestyles quit smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, and maintain a balanced diet, as these steps can reduce cancer risks,” Dr. Lalit advised.
