Kenya Elections: Raila Odinga Now Leads Ruto

Raila Odinga has now taken the lead against his rival William Ruto as tallying in the Kenya presidential election continues.

Both Daily Nation and Citizen TV – Kenya’s main media houses, reported that Odinga was leading Ruto by less than 200,000 votes.

At 10:03pm, Citizen TV reported that Odinga had 3,045,218 votes representing 50.89% of votes tallied so far by the news organisation.

Ruto had 2,862,051 votes representing 47.83% of the votes tallied by Citizen TV. This means Citizen TV has tallied almost 6,000,000 votes out of the total 12 million ballots cast in Tuesday’s election.

As at 10:18pm, Daily Nation reported that Raila was leading with 3,962,244 votes (49.67%) against Ruto’s 3,962,110 (49.67%).

Daily Nation has tallied 7,977, 071 total votes cast, meaning they have a better picture of the situation.

Media houses explained that they were allowed by the electoral body to tally the results. The provisional results the media houses are releasing are based on their speed and resources deployed.

Media houses have set up their own tallying centres to count the presidential election results.

Although all are sourcing the data from the electoral commission, the figures are varying across the media houses depending on a number of factors.

The results show the race remains tight between the deputy president Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The law requires the electoral body to undertake verification of the presidential election results and declare the president-elect within the seven days.

“We shall endeavour to conclude this exercise at the earliest possible,” said the electoral body.
