Kampala: Newly Wedded Bride Dies ‘while Attempting Contraception’

The Directorate of Crime Investigations is probing an incident in which a newly wedded woman died from a hospital in Kampala while attempting contraception.

The deceased has been identified as Joana Namutebi who officially wedded her yet to be identified husband on Friday last week.

Reports indicate that the couple held their reception at Sheraton Hotel Kampala and there after spend a night at the same hotel as they were preparing to go for their honeymoon.

However, on Saturday, it is said that Joana, together with her husband, went to Women’s Hospital International in Bukoto for a family planning injection.

“Upon reaching the hospital facility, the hospital advised them to take an Intra Urine Device (IUD) coil. She was scanned and unfortunately her uterus was not well positioned and the doctors gave her some water hoping that the water would probably align the uterus,” Police said on Monday.

It was also established that the lady was on her period and she was fasting too.

It is said that the gynaecologist advised that a person who is having her periods cannot take up the IUD “but for some reason, the coil was inserted and she immediately developed severe headache, started vomiting with severe stomach pain and passed out.”

According to Police, Namutebi was immediately put on a drip but she didn’t respond to the treatment.

She was referred to Victoria hospital but she died on the way.

“The family is yet to be informed about the cause of her death. We don’t want to rush into arrests as we want to first liaise with all the parties that were involved to find out if there was any level of negligence or whether the cause of death was natural,” said police.
