Kaizer Chiefs should pounce on Zungu after Sundowns departure

Kaizer Chiefs should consider signing former Mamelodi Sundowns star Bongani Zungu on a short-term deal.

The 31-year-old former Bafana Bafana star announced on Friday that he was leaving the Brazilians after two years. Zungu joined Sundowns in 2013 from the University of Pretoria and won the league twice and the CAF Champions League before leaving for Portugal. ‘Ben 10’ spent five years in Portugal and France before he returned for his second stint at Downs.

With Zungu leaving Sundowns, the opportunity is there for top teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to sign the star. At 31, the midfielder has passed his peak and is no longer a player he was four or five years ago. The Buccaneers might need some experience in the middle of the park to assist Miguel Timm and Patrick Maswanganyi. With Thabang Monare gone, maybe Zungu might called in but very unlikely.

The Buccaneers appear sorted in the midfield but Amakhosi are not. Kaizer Chiefs failed to compete with Downs and Pirates last season and maybe Zungu might bring a spark the club needs in the middle of the park. The likes of Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo have failed to bring ‘Ben 10’ energy to the midfield.

At 31, Zungu might be the club’s best option regarding experience and leadership. The former Sundowns player announced his departure on social media.

“I would like to thank Mamelodi Sundowns fans, the technical team and the President for the last two seasons,” Zungu said.

“The relationship I have with the club is beyond the professional space, sundowns will always be family to me and the entire Zungu family.

Zungu leaves Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs to sign?

“I will always be grateful for every opportunity I was offered, so I say this with a heavy heart that I will be leaving the club.

“Thank you to all the amazing supporters who have been amazing to me throughout, I will always be grateful.

“I wish the team all the best, I know bigger success awaits you. I can’t say this enough, Thank You KBY.”
