Kaizer Chiefs: No foreign internationals! Will Zwane thrive with only locals?

For the first time in a VERY long time, Kaizer Chiefs will begin a football season with only local players when they face Royal AM on Saturday.

Kick-off at Chartsworth Stadium is at 17:30.

Now, there is a breathe of fresh air at Naturena with the new technical team and new players eager to impress and bring back the old glory days.

What’s special about this Chiefs group that will be led by Arthur Zwane is that there are no foreign internationals in the team.

Of course, some would mention Khama Billiat as he was born in Zimbabwe but he’s as good as a local boy after spending over a decade in South Africa.

Consequently, Billiat holds a permanent South African citizenship, meaning he is registered as a local to feature for any of the Chiefs matches.

Chiefs parted ways with three foreign internationals at the end of last season, and they are Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole and Anthony Akumu.

Goakeeper Daniel Akpeyi and striker Leonardo Castro were both registered as locals because they had spent over five years in the country.

WILL ZWANE’S KAIZER CHIEFS THRIVE WITH ONLY LOCAL BOYS?

Zwane has one of the biggest jobs in the country which comes with its own challenges, especially with Chiefs desperate to end their seven-year trophy wait.

Chiefs have, so far, tried to bring in players from outside the country but they are yet to find the quality they are looking for in them.

Burundi-born striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana recently stopped training with Chiefs, and the technical team is undecided on whether or not to sign him.

Chiefs also have Mozambique international Edmilson Dove who is being assessed by Zwane and his technical team, and he COULD become the ‘only’ foreign international this season IF he is signed.

Nonetheless, the absence of foreign internationals in the current Chiefs isn’t cause for concern as Zwane has a formidable squad comprising of local talent.

A few years ago, TS Galaxy had an all-South African squad, and they achieved great things as a club, including winning the 2019 Nedbank Cup and reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

And if a ‘small’ team such as TS Galaxy could do it, then nothing should stop Zwane and Chiefs from thriving with local talent this season.
