Kaizer Chiefs get a second chance to sign rare goal-scoring talent?

Kaizer Chiefs might get a second chance to sign one of their recent marquee targets but they have to act fast.

Mayo’s record in the PSL is an enviable one

Khanyisa Mayo scored 12 goals in the 2022-2023 Betway Premiership season. That earned him a share of the Golden Boot with Peter Shalulile. He repeated similar antics in 2023-2024 when he bagged 10 goals in the league for Cape Town City. Who else has notched double figures in consecutive league seasons? Not many players.

Peter Shalulile is the outlier in the group having hit double figures for goals in four consecutive campaigns between 2019-2020 and 2022-2023. He scored nine times in the 2023-2024 league season so narrowly missed out on doing it five times on the trot. The legendary Bradley Grobler has hit double figures for the last two campaigns but Mayo scored once more than him in total over those seasons. Gabadinho Mhango’s blistering 16 goals in 28 league matches in 2019-2020 seems a distant memory now; he’s never managed more than seven in a single campaign since.

Mabasa still has to prove it over a few seasons

Tshegofatso Mabasa scored nine times in 23 league matches for Bloem Celtic in 2018-2019. He went off the boil for a while but found his groove last season, scoring 16 times in the league (10 for Pirates and six for Swallows) to become the country’s top marksman. Aside from Mabasa, only Iqraam Rayners (15), Lucas Ribeiro (12), Bradley Grobler (11) and Mayo (10) hit 10+ in the league last term. Rayners could join an elite crew by bagging double figures for Sundowns in 2024-2025 after his big-money move from the increasingly fashionable Stellenbosch FC.

Is Mayo flirting with Kaizer Chiefs?

26-year-old Khanyisa Mayo wasn’t a million miles away from becoming a Chiefs player in the winter before eventually making the switch to Algerian side Belouizdad. The former Cape Town City man was reportedly less than an hour away from becoming a Glamour Boy and he’s not shutting the door on a move in the future.

“Regarding Chiefs, yes, if I ever think about coming back home, they will be my first preference,” Mayo told KickOff.

“I see myself representing one of the top teams in the country,” Mayo said, affirming his loyalty to Kaizer Chiefs. The 24-year-old striker emphasised, “If I ever think about coming back home, they will be my first preference.” Mayo’s admiration for the club runs deep, noting that his father played for Chiefs, which strengthens his bond to the team. “It’s the biggest team in South Africa, and my dad played there,” Mayo added, hinting at the emotional connection that could guide his decision if he returns to South Africa.
