Kabale: Several Arrested for Selling Fake Agro-Inputs

A sting operation by Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) in the districts of Kisoro and Kabale ended with the arrest of 6 people confiscation of fake and expired agro which were being sold without licenses.

The fake agro inputs including different types of fertilizers, chemicals, seeds, pesticides among others were seized in an operation conducted within Kabale town, Kicumbi trading center and Katuna town council.

Most of the fake and expired agro inputs were picked from Inputs limited Agro-chemicals shop in Kicumbi trading center, and A’S’K farmer’s Agro inputs shop from Kabale town.

Out of the 15 Agro input shops that were visited in Kabale district, only two had operational licenses and one had not renewed his operational licenses. Some Agro input operators who were taken to Kabale Central Police Station to record a statement for not having operational license.

Wandera George, the team leader of the MAAIF officials, said an ultimatum of one month has been given to all Agro input shop owners to finalize registration and have their workers trained before they are arrested and aligned before courts of law.

He also noted that operations of the same type will be conducted on a quarterly basis.

Caleb Ngabirano, the Kamuganguzi Sub County Agricultural officer who represented the district Agricultural officer during an operation said that the operation came at a right time because they have been overwhelmed by the farmers who complain over fake inputs yet the district lacks resources to carry out such operations.

He added that it would be better if such operations come every season of growing crops.
