Kabale Milk Prices Shoot Up

The rising price of milk in Kabale District has been blamed on external markets of milk in neighbouring countries and the dry spells that were being experienced by the cattle corridor districts, mostly Kiruhura.

The milk price over the past month, has jumped from Shs 1200 to Shs 2000.

Benjamin Turyahikayo the chairperson of Kigezi Dairy Farmer’s Cooperative Society says the dry spells caused low milk production in Kiruhura district and the external markets of milk from Kenya and milk processing factories in Uganda were forced to come to Kigezi to compensate for the reduction in their milk consumption.

Turyahikayo says that when these external milk markets came to Kabale it increased the demand which resulted in the increase of milk prices.

He however says that this month the prices have slightly reduced since the cattle corridor districts have started receiving rains.

According to Turyahikayo, milk collected on a daily basis has increased in this month from 3300 liters last month to the current 3700 liters.
