July inflation rate cools to 4.3pc

Kenya’s monthly inflation rate has declined to 4.3pc in July from a 4.6pc reported in June this year as retail prices of key food items and fuel eased during the period.

Latest data published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) indicates that the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index decreased by 0.5pc between June and July.

“In particular, prices of tomatoes, wheat flour-brown, onion-leeks and bulbs and maize flour- sifted dropped by 5.5pc, 4.2pc, 4.1pc and 3.3pc, respectively, between June 2024 and July 2024,” said KNBS.

According to the bureau, there was was also a 0.4pc drop in the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ Index on account of prices of 200 kWh of electricity, 50 kWh of electricity and kerosene decreasing by 9.4pc, 4.4pc and 0.8pc respectively.

However, prices of gas/LPG went up by 0.2p during the period.

A 0.5pc drop in petrol prices as well as 0.9pc drop in diesel prices saw Transport Index ease by 0.1pc over the same period.
